Automation & Controls Engineer (Manufacturing)Position Overview
The Automation & Controls Engineer provides technical support for multiple production lines to ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality manufacturing operations. This role focuses on maintaining and optimizing automation systems, improving production performance, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesAutomation & Controls- Modify, optimize, and maintain instrumentation and control systems, including:
- PLC programs
- HMI applications
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to:
- PLCs, HMIs, sensors, robots, and servo drives
- Ethernet and industrial communication networks
- Perform PLC programming using Allen-Bradley platforms (RSLogix5, RSLogix5000)
- Program and maintain variable frequency drives (PowerFlex series)
- Support SCADA systems (highly desired)
- Maintain high equipment reliability and uptime across production lines
- Troubleshoot electrical, control, and process equipment issues
- Manage calibration of plant instrumentation
- Support maintenance teams with technical expertise and training
- Develop and maintain:
- As-built electrical, controls, and process drawings
- Control system documentation and change control procedures
- Ensure all plant modifications and installations comply with:
- Federal, State, and Local codes
- Industry standards (NEC, OSHA, ISA, ANSI)
- Ensure adherence to:
- Personal safety
- Food safety
- Product quality standards
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance:
- Production rates
- Efficiency and yield
- Equipment performance
- Changeover times
- Analyze data to develop troubleshooting tools and optimize systems
- Participate in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
- Partner with engineering, maintenance, and quality teams
- Support non-conformance investigations for finished products and raw materials
- Assist in training maintenance and production personnel
- Contribute to plant startups and new equipment installations
- Provide on-call support, including nights and weekends as needed
- Assist with project management and technical reporting
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in automation and controls within a production environment
- Strong knowledge of:
- PLC programming and troubleshooting
- Industrial automation systems
- Manufacturing and maintenance processes
- Proficiency with:
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- 5+ years of experience in automation and controls
- Experience in manufacturing or food production environments
- Experience with SCADA systems
- Experience supporting plant startups or line commissioning
- Familiarity with:
- Allen-Bradley (MicroLogix, ControlLogix)
- Fanuc robotics
- Wonderware
- PLC Programming (Allen-Bradley: RSLogix5, RSLogix5000)
- HMI & SCADA Systems
- Industrial Networks (Ethernet, DeviceNet, ControlNet)
- VFD Programming (PowerFlex)
- Robotics & Vision Systems (Fanuc preferred)
- Electrical Schematics & Blueprint Reading
- Instrumentation & Calibration
