Role Overview

This position provides electrical engineering support for Caterpillar electronic systems, covering a wide range of electronic components used on CAT machines.

The role is hardware focused, with heavy emphasis on electronics validation, supplier interaction, and lifecycle support of existing (including legacy) electronic technologies.

Scope of Work

Electronic Systems & Components

The engineer will support electronic components such as:

  • Sensors
  • Actuators
  • Shifters
  • Control modules (ECMs)
  • Telematics systems
  • NSA / embedded electronic components

Support spans design validation, testing, supplier coordination, and production/service support.

Key Responsibilities

1. Hardware & Electronics Engineering

  • Work with electronic hardware components
  • Analyze and understand PCB designs
  • Perform or support PCB simulations when required
  • Understand circuit behavior and hardware design intent
  • Interact effectively with core hardware design teams

2. Validation & Testing (Primary Focus)

  • Heavy involvement in circuit and component validation
  • Knowledge of testing such as:
    • EMC / EMI testing
    • Vibration testing
    • Thermal / soak testing
  • Understanding how ECMs are:
    • Manufactured
    • Tested on assembly lines
  • Support production and service validation of electronic components

Design vs Validation split:
Majority of the role is validation focused, not design heavy.

Tools & Hands On Skills Required

Candidates should have working knowledge of:

  • Oscilloscopes (e.g., Tektronix)
  • Multimeters
  • Bus managers
  • General electronics lab equipment

Preferred Candidate Profile

Must Have Skills

  1. Electronic components knowledge
  2. Hardware validation experience
  3. Understanding of:
    • Electronic component lifecycle
    • Assembly line manufacturing of ECMs
  4. Strong communication skills (internal & supplier facing)

Good to Have Skills

  • PCB design and simulation experience (preferred)
  • Wire harness experience (acceptable, but not top preference)
  • Hardware manufacturing background (strong advantage)
  • Basic Python or automation knowledge (nice to have, not required)
  • Familiarity with Caterpillar electronic systems

What Is NOT a Focus

  • Software validation is not a requirement
  • Software skills alone will not qualify a candidate

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required
  • Associate degrees are not accepted
  • Preferred experience range:
    • 46 years ideal
    • Upper limit around 6 years
    • Candidates with 1015+ years may be considered overqualified

Location & Work Expectations

  • On site position only
  • Must be based in Peoria / Mossville from Day 1
