Job Summary

The Structured Cabling Technician I is an entry-level role responsible for supporting the installation, routing, termination, and maintenance of low-voltage cabling systems in commercial environments. This position works under the direction of senior technicians to assist with structured cabling, telecom closet buildouts, pathway installation, and device support across a variety of project sites. The role is hands-on and physically active, with a strong focus on safety, quality workmanship, and learning industry standards within structured cabling, audio visual, and physical security infrastructure projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation, routing, dressing, and termination of low-voltage cabling, including CAT5e and CAT6 systems.

  • Pull and route cable to IT closets, modular furniture, outlet locations, and other designated installation points.

  • Install and support cable pathways, including J-hooks, D-rings, cable trays, and ladder racks.

  • Perform cable management tasks such as bundling, labeling, dressing, and securing cable runs.

  • Terminate cables at jacks, keystones, patch panels, and modular plugs such as RJ-45 connectors.

  • Support the installation of wireless access points and other low-voltage devices.

  • Assist with the buildout of telecom closets, racks, backboards, patch panels, and related infrastructure.

  • Help mount and support audio visual and security devices as directed on commercial job sites.

  • Read and follow blueprints, one-line diagrams, schematics, and written installation instructions.

  • Use basic testing and troubleshooting tools to verify cable continuity and support quality control activities.

  • Perform firestopping, jobsite organization, and daily documentation as required.

  • Communicate professionally with team members, supervisors, and site personnel.

  • Follow all safety requirements, including proper use of personal protective equipment, safe lift practices, and jobsite cleanup in accordance with OSHA standards.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • 0-2 years of experience in commercial structured cabling, low-voltage installation, or data cabling preferred.

  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of structured cabling materials, installation methods, and hand tools.

  • Ability to read and follow blueprints, technical drawings, and written instructions.

  • Ability to assist with cable installation across structured cabling, audio visual, or physical security projects.

  • Familiarity with cable types such as CAT3, CAT5e, CAT6, shielded cable, fiber, and structured wiring preferred.

  • Exposure to testing and troubleshooting tools such as toners, multimeters, and continuity testers preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail, dependability, willingness to learn, and commitment to quality work.

  • Ability to work effectively in commercial construction environments and follow site-specific procedures.

  • Strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Work Experience

  • Entry-level experience in structured cabling, low-voltage systems, audio visual, or physical security installation preferred.

  • Experience working on commercial project sites such as corporate, retail, education, industrial, healthcare, or similar environments preferred.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)

  • Typical start time is 7:00 a.m.

  • Expected schedule is approximately 40-45 hours per week.

  • May require travel to local job sites based on project assignments.

  • Occasional overtime may be required based on project schedules.

  • Contract-to-hire opportunity with on-the-job training and career development.

  • Must be able to work on ladders, scissor lifts, and in confined spaces.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical labor for extended periods.

  • Required tools include basic hand tools such as a multi-bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle-nose pliers, channel locks, cable stripper, punch down tool, flashlight, gloves, and tool pouch.

  • Steel toe or composite toe work boots are required.
