About the Role
Were seeking a highly skilled Special Procedures / IR Technologist to join a collaborative Interventional Radiology team supporting a wide range of minimally invasive procedures. This role is ideal for a tech who thrives in a fast-paced, procedure-driven environment, values safety and quality, and works seamlessly with physicians, nurses, and anesthesia in sterile settings.
Key Responsibilities- Procedure Support: Set up, scrub in, and circulate for IR and special procedures including but not limited to:
- Angiography, embolization, thrombolysis, angioplasty/stents
- Central venous access (ports, tunneled catheters, PICCs)
- Drain placements, biopsies, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty (if applicable)
- Neuro-interventional support (if applicable to site)
- Imaging & Equipment: Operate fluoroscopy/C-arm, fixed angiography suites, ultrasound (as trained), and 3D roadmap systems; ensure accurate imaging parameters and radiation dose optimization (ALARA).
- Sterile Technique: Maintain sterile fields; prepare trays, contrast, medications under direction; assist with device selection and deployment.
- Patient Care: Verify identity and consent, perform pre-procedure screening, explain procedures, monitor patient status, and assist with post-procedure recovery and transfers.
- Documentation: Complete procedure logs, implants/device documentation, radiation dose records, and PACS/EMR charting accurately and timely.
- Quality & Safety: Adhere to departmental protocols, ACR standards, radiation safety, and infection prevention; perform room turnover and equipment QA.
- Collaboration: Partner closely with interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons, anesthesiology, nursing, and support staff to ensure smooth room flow and on-time starts.
- On-Call: Participate in after-hours/weekend/vacation call rotation as assigned; respond within required call-time radius.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
- Certification:
- Required: ARRT (R) in good standing; state radiography license (if applicable).
- Preferred: ARRT (VI) or (CI); BLS (AHA). ACLS preferred for high-acuity programs.
- Experience:
- Required: 12+ years in Interventional Radiology or Special Procedures (will consider strong cath lab or OR C-arm with IR precepting).
- Preferred: Experience with complex vascular/neuro cases, moderate sedation workflows, and contrast reactions.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with fluoroscopic equipment, angiography systems (e.g., GE, Siemens, Philips), PACS/EMR; strong sterile technique and radiation safety knowledge.
- Soft Skills: Excellent communication, situational awareness, and teamwork; calm under pressure; patient-centered mindset.
- Core Schedule: [e.g., 4x10s MonThu, 7:00a5:30p]
- Call: [e.g., 12 weekday calls per week + every 4th weekend; 30-minute response time]
- Floating: May float to Cath Lab/OR C-arm as needed [adjust as applicable].
- Modalities: [Philips Azurion / Siemens Artis / GE Innova], C-arm, Ultrasound
- Systems: [Epic / Cerner], [Sectra / GE PACS]
- Case Mix: [% vascular, % body IR, % neuro if applicable], average daily cases [XY]
- Lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs; stand for extended periods; frequent bending/stooping; PPE use.
- Adhere to radiation safety (lead aprons/thyroid shields), contrast/media handling, and sterile protocols.
