Summary
If you are a talented, knowledgeable, and motivated individual with experience conducting comprehensive patient management activities and analyzing trends to develop a patient management plan AND you want to play a significant role in an organization, then consider becoming a Nurse Practitioner with the Pediatric Oncology Branch.
Responsibilities
As an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner), you will:
Perform invasive procedures independently, which may include lumbar puncture, bone marrow biopsy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, fine needle aspiration, ommaya reservoir access, central line removal, arterial blood gas, suturing, skin punch biopsy, cytotoxic administration, etc. Evaluate and interpret findings.
Provide patient and family counseling and health education, to a diverse and complex patient population, with consideration of the patient's learning needs, learning readiness and impediments to the process.
Communicate and collaborate with the multidisciplinary research team to ensure that patient management strategies are successful, and meeting with patient care research needs.
Perform and supervise diagnostic studies in the outpatient clinic and pulmonary function laboratory, document care in the medical record, coordinate input from consultants, collect and maintain research databases, and assist in the development of clinical and translational research studies.
Participate in the development of new clinical research protocols providing expertise in experimental design relevant to practical patient care.

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Completion of a graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR
Completion of a Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
AND
LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
You must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
AND
You must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
AND
Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.
Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to the basic education and licensure requirements, in order to qualify for the Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) positions below:

GS-13: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of professional nursing experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing leadership in comprehensive nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care service to patients and family members as a primary health resource; securing health and developmental histories from patients or parents; recording findings and making critical evaluations; performing or requests special screening developmental tests, or laboratory tests and interpreting the results; making decisions concerning medical or nursing care needs of patients and physicians.
